The first word war was described at the time as the 'War to end all wars'. It began July 28th 1914 and ended November 11th 1918. By the time the guns fell silent nearly 1.1 million British and Empire Service Men and Women had been killed and when the soldiers from all the nations involved in the conflict were included the total increased to more than 10 million.
The Royal British Legion in Surrey came up with the idea of the SILENT SOLDIER and has invited others to join them and 'sponsor' a Silent Soldier. As in 1918 when the survivors returned, they appeared silently.
The Soldier at the Hospital Memorial appeared silently and has been sponsored by the RBL Branch here in Burnham.
The SILENT SOLDIER is a tribute to the huge sacrifice that was made by so many during those war years.
Soldiers have appeared at Berrow, but should any business, organization, or person, wish to sponsor or require any information about the "Silent Soldier" please get in touch with Burnham-on-Sea Royal British Legion. John Crosby 01278 238723
