Well where did 2018 go? It does not seem that long since I wrote at the end of my Christmas message at the end of 2017 that tickets are now available for our party night, read further...
One of our ongoing concerns over the past years has been the dwindling numbers on our committee and I am very pleased to be able to say that as we move into 2019 we have three new members on our committee who were co-opted at a specially arranged EGM last year.
We continue to see changes within the hospital and due to the ever increasing age of many of the patients we see more with age related problems. To aid the newly appointed Dementia and Liaison Nurse we purchased two interactive computer packages at just over £13,000.
During 2018 we also paid for a replacement exercise bike for the Physio Department, supplied a new DAB Radio for the Men's Ward, and a new digital piano for the conservatory. We funded a special 50's entertainment show for the patients and this year have agreed to fund two events as well as a friendly horse visit -- don't ask!! Buckets and shovels are at the ready!
We now have more regular contact with the Hospital Chaplain and participated in two services within the hospital the last one including members of the RBL who joined us for a small Remembrance Service followed by singing of World War 1 songs.
More services are planned for 2019 for those patients who wish to be involved. The piano is being used for various musical events. We have shared in some entertainment provided by members of the U3A Concert Party and on the 19th December the Rotary Choir visited to sing carols for the patients. We are now working on some special projects. As these take fruition you will find information on my Blog on our website www.friendsofburnhamhospital.org.uk or released in Ceri's News Letters.
Over the year we have had considerable help from other organisations. We continued with the work that we started last year with the Model Railway Society resulting in us receiving a donation of £750 from them.
The ‘Men's Shed’ in Burnham arranged for the old bench outside Outpatients to be refurbished, it now has a new and a wooden leg (sorry) as well as a coat of varnish. We are also very pleased to have the help of the Lions with the tending of the War Memorial area including the fence.
We will run our usual Fundraising events this year - all these will be found on events calendar as well as our website. We continue to experiment with our October event to find a suitable format, more about that very soon.
I am proud to be Chairman of the Friends Committee. It is great to be able to work with so many people who have one thing in mind and that is, the support of 'Our Hospital'. Finally to all of our members and supporters, on behalf of our committee, I would like to thank you all for your continuing support. Without you, all our work would be to no avail and the likelihood is that one of the cherished organisations, Burnham Hospital would find itself struggling to keep up with demand.
A HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL
